What to do after catching a Boston squirrel
Using an exclusion method is ideal since the squirrel escapes on its own. There are however instances when a squirrel is trapped in a cage. Being in the cage is stressful and the squirrel can get dehydrated. The animal must not be kept in the cage for a long time. Food and water must be provided. Once a squirrel is caught it is important to remove it. This can be done in two ways.

• Killing the squirrel
AVOID doing it. This is not legal and most inhuman. Feeding the meat to pets is also not a good option as the squirrel may be a carrier of diseases like rabies.

• Relocation
Relocating the squirrel to a far off place at least 35-40 miles away is the best method to remove squirrels. The chosen place must be able to provide food, water and shelter to the squirrel.

Release
The squirrel must be transported to a far off place. The squirrel is quite heavy and must be carried with care. Wear protective gloves. Keep your legs away from the trap. The squirrel may attempt to bite. Open the cage with care. The squirrel will immediately run out. Avoid confronting the squirrel.

Place of relocation
Studies were conducted to estimate the distance of relocation. It was found that 80% of squirrels released a mile or two returned. The number decreased when the distance was over the 10 mile range. The success also increased if they were released at night. There are many options when it comes to relocating a squirrel. A wooded area with food and water is preferred by many. There is also the alternate view which suggests that the squirrel being used to an urban environment may not adjust well in a wooded environment. A squirrel box in the yard where the squirrel is released allows the squirrel to survive in its own environment. Care should be taken to squirrel proof your home and regularly inspect to prevent re entry into your home.

Mother & baby squirrels
If there are squirrel babies found in your home it is best to wait till they are weaned before trapping the mother. Setting a trap at this time will mostly catch the mother. A mother squirrel will do anything to return to its babies. The babies also die if they are not weaned. If you happen to catch the mother and find the babies later then re-habitation of the babies is essential. The babies can be transferred to the yard with a heat source. The mother when released will return to them. This may of course require consultation with wildlife experts. Improper methods may cause death of the babies. Relocation may not always be favorable to the squirrels. Many of them do not seem to survive in new hostile environments. It is therefore better to use an exclusion door or funnel to remove squirrels. The best method is to prevent them from entering by keeping your home secure and animal proof.
